The design is inspired from Japanese gambling cards called Hana Fuda, featuring the elements of the special cards (crane, sun and Peony). These cards were inspired from the Portuguese Hombre cards, which then was banned banned by the government in the 16th century. Hana Fuda was then hand crafted and manufactured by Nintendo (yes that Nintendo DS’s Nintendo), which the began to be popularized as the Yakuza used them in gambling Parlors.
